Thanks to ongoing coverage by the Herald Gazette and efforts by a wonderful group of volunteers,
Lamar Arts has become a successful organization in the county. Much has transpired since my first
inquiries to the Georgia Council for the Arts in 1992 to found an arts organization in this county.
Thanks to grants from The Grassroots Program developed by the Georgia General Assembly in
1993, we have been able to bring a wide variety of fine arts to the community.Our annual Celebrations of the Arts have included: the premier of a play, poetry readings by
acclaimed poet, Nicole Cooley, Native American drum making workshops, famous fiction author
reading by Michael Bishop, high school master singing workshop by Elise Whit, Atlanta, lecture
on Peruvian artifacts by city manager Kenny Roberts, music from chamber concerts to military bands,
book signing for Nancy Butts and Joy Barrett and others, sculpture walk /exhibit, poetry workshops,
storytelling, plays, workshops for women, flower arrangement exhibit, exhibit and interdisciplinary
events at my studio, writing and card contests for children, musicians for Christmas Tour of Homes
and many other events.As many of you already know, I have turned over the presidency to Eleanor Stecker, also a local artist,
whom I feel will continue our efforts to keep the arts vibrant in Lamar County. She, Maggie Page, our
Vice President, and our board have some exciting plans for the future. I have had a lot of fun, enjoyed
all of the people so much and have worked hard. I need time now to paint and pursue other adventures.
I will happily remain on the Board of Directors and look forward to our continued growth.I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those dedicated officers and volunteers who
worked so hard for Lamar Arts. Many of you worked on multiple committees and held terms
much longer than was expected. You gave time, effort and your finances and were much appreciated.
I thank the Chamber of Commerce for help with flyers and the use of the building. I thank the many
businesses and individuals that contributed food and money for our receptions and the garden clubs
for flower arrangements. We owe a debt of gratitude to Gordon College for use of the Auditorium.
The interactions with the faculty was stimulating and created lasting friendships. Thanks to our local
Library, Senior and Civic Centers, our patrons and loyal membership. Without your financial support,
and personal contributions, we would not have survived. Your acceptance and attendance has been
gratifying. It has as well been wonderful to have the Carnegie Library be a lasting part of the community.I hope you will want to be a part of Lamar Arts and I look forward to continuing to work with you
